How Long To Stay Off New Asphalt Driveway

Asphalt takes time to dry and cure, and the use of vehicles too early can be particularly risky to a new surface. Thankfully, there is relative consistency in asphalt drying and curing times, so it's easy to estimate when a new asphalt driveway is safe to use. That said, this remains one of the most common questions from home and building owners when having a new driveway or parking lot installed:

"So, how long should you stay off a freshly paved driveway?"

We thought it would be helpful to provide the simple answer to this question right here on our blog so property owners can rest easy knowing when they can pull a car onto that beautiful new blacktop.

A new asphalt surface, such as a driveway or parking lot, usually takes 48-72 hours (2-3 days) to fully dry. After that period, you can walk and drive on your new pavement without concern of damaging it. To be safe, we typically say to way at least 48 hours, and recommend waiting as close to the 72-hour mark as possible depending on how urgently you need use of the surface.

It's worth mentioning that there is a difference between drying and curing when it comes to asphalt. The initial drying period only takes a few days after the surface is laid, whereas the curing process takes about 30 days. During the curing process, heat from the sun causes the pavement to further dry out and release excess oils. After about a month of this, the pavement will shift from a dark black to more of a grey color, and at that point we typically recommend sealcoating the surface to prevent excessive drying out - this helps extend the longevity of the asphalt.

While the surface is safe to use after the initial drying period, we still recommend you use care with anything that might damage the surface - such as heavy equipment use or damaging materials like oils - until the curing and sealcoating process is complete.

Short Answer: How long to stay off a new asphalt driveway?

  • Safe to use with some level of care after initial drying, 48-72 hours (2-3 days).
  • Fully safe with less concern for use of heavy equipment or damaging substances (oils, etc) after curing and sealcoating, about 30 days after initial drying period.
